Although it is conceivable that he composed music in the last ten years of his life, there are no pieces that can be definitely assigned so late; indeed, there is evidence to suggest that many of the pieces published or John Dowland was married and had children, a fact that can be inferred from his letter to Sir Robert Cecil. However, he stayed away from his family for long times with his wife staying in England while he worked on the Continent. Names of neither his wife nor of his children are known. John Dowland (1563–1626) was an English, possibly Irish-born, composer, singer, and lutenist. Very little is known of Dowland's early life, but it is generally thought he was born in London, or possibly Dublin.
